"The Jitterbug" was a song intended to appear in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It would have featured Dorothy Gale, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion as they encountered the Jitterbug, a minion of the Wicked Witch of the West.
The song was performed by Dorothy's actress, the late Judy Garland; the Scarecrow's actor, the late Ray Bolger; the Tin Man's actor, the late Jack Haley; and the Cowardly Lion's actor, the late Burt Lahr.
In 1987 the song was featured in a stage musical adaptation of the film.
In 2016, the song was used in the 2016 direct-to-video animated film Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz, with the heroes facing the Jitterbug, which was sent after them by the villainous Nome King. This version was performed by Dorothy's singing voice Amy Pemberton, the Scarecrow's voice actor Michael Gough, the Tin Man's voice actor Rob Paulsen, and the Cowardly Lion's voice actor Todd Stashwick.
Lyrics[]
Did you just hear what I just heard?
That noise didn't come from an ordinary bird
It may be just a cricket or a critter in the tree
It's giving me the jitters in the joints around my knees
I think I see a shadow and it's fuzzy and it's furry
I haven't got a brain but I think I ought to worry
I haven't got a heart but I feel a palpitation
As monarch of the forest I don't like the situation
Are you gonna stand around and let them fill us full of horror?
I'd like to roar them down...
But I think I lost my roarer
It's a whosis!
It's a whosis?
It's a whatsits!
It's a whatsits?
Who's that?
Who's that?
Who's that?
Who's that?
Who's that hiding in the tree tops?
It's that rascal
The jitterbug!
Should you catch him
buzzing 'round you?
Keep away from
The jitterbug!
Oh the bees in the breeze and the bats in the trees
Have a terrible, horrible buzz
But the bees in the breeze and the bats in the trees
Couldn't do what the jitter bug does.
So be careful of that rascal
Keep away from
The Jitterbug!
(Instrumental)
Oh the jitter!
Oh the bug!
Oh the jitterbug Bugabug, bugabug, bugaboo
In a twitter
In the throes
Oh the critter's got me dancing on a thousand toes
Thar she blows!
Did you just hear what I just heard?
That noise didn't come from an ordinary bird
It may be just a cricket or a critter in the tree
It's giving me the jitters in the joints around my knees
I think I see a pigeon and it's fuzzy and it's furry
I haven't got a brain but I think I ought to worry
I haven't got a heart but I feel a palpitation
It's not a cup of flowers, I don't like the situation
Are you gonna stand around and let them fill us full of horror?
I'd like to roar them down...
But I think I lost my roarer
It's a whosis!
It's a whosis?
It's a whatsits!
It's a whatsits?
Who's that?
Who's that?
Who's that?
Who's that?
Who's that hiding in the tree tops?
It's that rascal
The jitterbug!
Should you catch him
buzzing 'round you?
Keep away from
The jitterbug!
Oh the bees in the breeze and the bats in the trees
Have a terrible, horrible buzz
But the bees in the breeze and the bats in the trees
Couldn't do what the jitter bug does.
So be careful of that rascal
Keep away from
The Jitterbug!
(Instrumental)
Oh the jitter!
Oh the bug!
Oh the jitterbug Bugabug, bugabug, bugaboo
In a twitter
In the throes
Oh the critter's got me dancing on a thousand toes
Thar she blows!
